Great days out for the steam & diesel enthusiast

Enthusiasts Events

Throughout the year, we run a number of enthusiast-focussed events showcasing an array of exciting visiting steam and diesel locomotives, starring alongside our eclectic mix of home based engines. From time to time, we also run special re-creations, double-headed trains and other quirky services aimed at the enthusiast.

Enthusiast Events celebrating our 50th Anniversary...

Spring Steam Gala

Kicking off our 50th anniversary year in suitable style, the Spring Steam Gala ran on March 20th, 21st and 22nd. A number of visiting locomotives were lined up for this event, as well as one or two surprises! Local services, non-stop trains, goods workings and more, what better way to sample Springtime in the Severn Valley?

'Dub Dee' No. 90733 made its debut on SVR metals from the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway Trust. Former resident Great Western Pannier Tank No. L92, in its striking London Transport maroon livery also attended the celebrations. Fellow Great Western Railway locomotive No. 4270, a heavy-freight tank, joined the lineup and the final visiting locomotive for the Gala was 'Coal Tank' No. 1054, which returned to the SVR for a third time, but this time in a different livery!

Autumn Steam Gala
The big one! Four days of steam locomotive action, operating continuously from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th September, including services that operate throughout the night. In 2015, the Thursday Preview Day returns on September 17th, offering you the chance to do something completely different. Taster Footplate Experiences and Brake Van Rides were the highlight of the Preview Day in 2014, and 2015 promises to be bigger and better! Our Autumn Gala is the biggest event of its kind, so make sure you put this one in your diary.

Diesel Gala

The diesel event everyone is talking about! Three days of diesel-only action operating an intensive service, giving you the opportunity to ride behind your favourite locomotive along the Severn Valley for as many hours as you like. The 2014 event saw two Deltics, two Class 50s and a Class 40 headlining, and our 2015 event plans to be even more of a diesel-fuelled spectacle!

Manor 50
A special weekend celebrating the last days of 'Manor' steam locomotives working on the famous Cambrian Network in West Wales. With the help of two former Great Western Railway 'Manor' locomotives No. 7802 Bradley Manor and No. 7812 Erlestoke Manor (subject to availability), the Severn Valley Railway will be transformed into the Cambrian Coast Railway of 1965 which ran 'Manors' between Shrewsbury, Aberystwyth and Pwllheli - the spiritual home of these locomotives.

The weekend will mark the achievement made by preservationists in saving two locomotives that worked in the final week of 'Manors' on the Cambrian routes in November 1965, still operational together in 2015, 50 years after they were condemned to the scrap yard. Both locomotives are owned by the Erlestoke Manor Fund who are running the event in conjunction with the SVR.

We will also be entertaining No. 7820 Dinmore Manor for the weekend!
