Our School Education Service provides advice and practical support for teachers and group leaders from a wide variety of educational and community organisations. Our Education Services Manager and Education Officer have backgrounds in primary and secondary education and a number of the staff who work with the service also come from the education sector. In addition to the practical help we are able to give to school groups arranging a visit to the unspoiled Severn Valley we also organise a number of curriculum based experiences, for a range of age groups, which further enhance a journey by heritage steam train. The Engine House... The Engine House is our new Education and Visitor Centre which is due to open in spring 2008. Some of our schools events will operate at The Engine House and a range of new events are being introduced. Click here to go directly to The Engine House page. Planning Your Visit - what's available... Besides practical advice, which is just a telephone call away, our School Visit Planning Pack is an excellent way to explore the range of opportunities that the Severn Valley Railway has to offer.
As a responsible tourist organisation and train operating company we take safety of our visitors and staff very seriously indeed. All schools receive safety advice which is dispatched with event joining packs and tickets and we can, of course, give you additional advice with particular queries and problems. The Severn Valley Railway operates a 'free places scheme' for supervising adults. The number of free places available varies depending on the event. School groups booking visits to the Severn Valley Railway must, at least, take up the free allocation of supervisors places. Teacher Downloads... As part of our service for schools visiting the Severn Valley Railway we have now introduced this new 'Teacher Downloads' section which we hope you will find useful. These documents are available in PDF format and require the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software. The following downloads are currently available: School Education Service Newsletter
Journey Ideas for School Visits
Access for the Disabled... Our booklet 'Journey Ideas for School Visits' contains a section devoted to issues surrounding disability and special needs. Some of our trains can accommodate visitors with mobility problems and toilets with disabled access are also available on some trains and at most stations. Please ask about which trains are most appropriate for the needs of your party. Your attention is particularly drawn to the section 'Are You Eligible for a Grant?' For further information please see our 'Disabled Access' section. Costs & Concessions... Discount fares are available for pre-booked groups from colleges, schools, nurseries and playgroups. Youth groups are also permitted to travel at 'schools' fares EXCEPT on certain busy weekends and when special events are operating. Fares for School Parties in 2008 at a Glance... (for school and youth groups of ten or more paying pupils) Information about our events & activities, when appropriate, will be available here for you to print, in PDF format. (these require the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software).
Please note - 1 free adult place per 10 paying children. Additional adults, above the free allocation, are also charged at the child or pupil rate. Are You Eligible for a Grant?... With assistance from other outside organisations we are currently able to offer two grants to help you cut the cost of a visit to the Severn Valley Railway. Special Needs Fund-West Bromwich Building Society & Mercian Trust... This fund allows adults who need to accompany a child or children with special needs, on a one to one basis, to travel free. It assists visits for children with a broad range of special needs. It does not distinguish between physical disability or any other medical condition that requires this extra support. If you think you may have a pupil or pupils who fall into this category please mention this when booking. Historical Model Railway Society Fund... Grants of at least £100 per school are available for schools taking part in our two day event called 'Railways Unwrapped'. Conditions surrounding this grant are not onerous. Interested teachers should discuss this option with our Education Officer at the time of booking.
We strongly recommend you to make a provisional booking by telephone in the first instance. We operate an advance booking system for all our special events up to twelve months in advance of the date of the visit to us. A booking form should be completed and returned to our School Education Service at Bewdley with a deposit as follows:
No payment is required on the day of your visit. An invoice will be sent to your organisation a few days after the event. Cheques should be made payable to: 'Severn Valley Railway (Holdings) PLC'. A Group Travel ticket will be supplied for all bookings. Please remember to bring this with you! Cancellation can only be accepted if notified more than 14 days before the date of travel, otherwise deposits will not be returned. On the day of your visit the Group Organiser MUST report to the station booking office to confirm exact numbers. |
