Fight Back Fund!

An important update from the three companies in the Severn Valley Railway Group - Severn Valley Railway Co Ltd., Severn Valley Railway (Holdings) PLC. and Severn Valley Railway Charitable Trust Ltd.

Thanks to an astounding response to our Fight Back Fund, we've received more than £930,000 in donations and share purchases. We are deeply grateful to every single person who has come to the rescue, to take away the immediate threat to the Railway’s future.

In 2021, because of social distancing, we won't be able to operate our services to normal capacity. We won’t see a return to sustainable levels of passenger revenue until well into the year.

We face a longer term and more serious threat than we could have envisaged. The huge loss of income to the SVR in 2020 and early 2021 means we won’t be able to make our crucial annual investment into the Railway. This amounts to £4.5 million and would fund essential restorations to our infrastructure and rolling stock, along with apprentice training. Later this year, we also expect to begin to repay the CBILS loan of £1.5 million.

The future for the SVR is challenging. But we are not going to give up the fight.

Instead, with our Fight Back Fund, we continue to fundraise for the SVR’s recovery. We are actively seeking further donations to this fund because fighting back is what we’re known for. Our pioneering preservationists did it when they brought the line back from ruin in the late 1960s; we managed it following the devastation of the storms in 2007; and with your help now, we’ll do it again.

We thank The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) for their generous emergency funding of £250,000 and the Government for £906,000 from the Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage, administered by Historic England and the NLHF. These are providing vital temporary relief for salaries, health and safety, security and fire systems, IT and improved digital and social media communications.

We are also approaching trusts and grant-making organisations to ask for support at this difficult time. Some of these know us well, having already contributed to other projects.

We still need your help. Please donate to the SVR’s Fight Back Fund
