Conditions of Carriage and Terms & Conditions

Tickets for Train Services
Each ticket is issued subject to the payment of the relevant published fare.
Everyone travelling on SVR trains must be covered by a valid ticket or other travel permit for their journey.
Tickets must not be resold.
Tickets are issued for standard class only. Upgrade to First Class, where available, requires the payment of a supplementary charge.
Tickets may be purchased online in advance (all pre-booked tickets are subject to a £2 booking fee, applied at the checkout), at SVR Station Booking Offices and from on board SVR Travelling Ticket Inspectors.
Bookings made via svr.co.uk will receive an email confirmation which must be validated and exchanged for tickets at a Booking Office on your day of travel.
Your email confirmation is not a valid travel ticket.
Online tickets via svr.co.uk are for travel on dates and services specified. Once booked, these tickets are NOT transferable to another date, cannot be transferred to another user and are NON-REFUNDABLE.

Timetabled Services
The issue of tickets does not imply that a timetabled service will run or that sufficient seats will be available for all passengers intending to travel. Tickets are sold via svr.co.uk and on a “turn up and go“ basis. The SVR shall not be liable for failure to carry a passenger on a standard service train if there is insufficient accommodation.
If there is insufficient seating accommodation in standard class, the TTI of the train may authorise passengers to occupy First Class seating without payment of the normal supplementary fare. Unless and until such authorisation is given the First Class supplement is payable.
Apart from tickets with a specified departure time, or unless otherwise specified, tickets may be used on any timetabled standard daily service on the day(s) for which they are valid.
SVR will use all reasonable endeavours to operate the timetable but cannot guarantee that services will be hauled by a particular type of traction or class of locomotive. Published lists of locomotives planned to be operating on any day are indicative only and subject to change without notice.
SVR may for safety or operational reasons:

  1. Suspend or discontinue the issue of tickets, and;
  2. Dispatch trains from stations before the arrival of connecting services, and;
  3. Withdraw all services from any station, and;
  4. Discontinue the running of trains,

however, SVR will then take all reasonable measures to facilitate completion of Passengers’ journeys.
Whilst every effort will be made to maintain services, the SVR does not guarantee that trains will depart or arrive at the times stated. We reserve the right to alter or suspend any train without notice. No liability for any loss, inconvenience or delay can be accepted.

Discounts
Discount on tickets can only be obtained using the correct form of proof or identification, as detailed on our website. If proof or identification is not provided, the full fare applicable will be charged.

Travel Beyond Destination
A passenger using a ticket for any station beyond that for which it is valid will be liable to pay the difference between the price paid for the Ticket and the appropriate fare for the journey actually undertaken.

Special Events
Day Rovers can only be purchased during special events where revised fares apply (unless otherwise stated).
If, due to unforeseen circumstances, we cancel your train (on time specific pre-booked services only), we will refund the monies paid by you, including the booking fee. We will NOT be liable for any other costs.
All attractions are subject to availability. We reserve the right to alter or suspend any attraction without notice. No liability for any loss, inconvenience or delay can be accepted.

Passengers’ Responsibilities
Children aged 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult when visiting the Railway and when travelling on trains.
Passengers should examine their tickets and any change given as soon as possible after issue. SVR may not accept liability for any mistakes that are not drawn to its attention promptly.
Passengers must retain their tickets so that they are available for inspection. Any passenger who cannot produce a valid ticket may be treated as having boarded the train without one.
SVR may refuse access to its trains or premises to anyone who appears to be drunk, disorderly, under the influence of drugs or is behaving in an offensive or abusive manner. In that event SVR shall not be liable for any refund or compensation nor for facilitating that person’s completion of their journey.
If you fail to arrive in time for the departure of your train, SVR will not refund any monies paid. Our team will endeavour to accommodate you on another train
If you are unable to travel to the SVR as a result of severe weather or illness SVR will not offer a refund or replacement tickets.
The SVR will not refund or make allowances for the cost of returning unused tickets. It is for you to decide on the most effective way of returning unused tickets and you are required to bear the cost.
Appropriate clothing (including a top and shoes) must be worn at all times. Clothing that is indecent or likely to cause offence in any way is not permitted.
Electronic cigarettes, cigarettes and pipes are not allowed within any building or enclosed space at the SVR. This is in line with government legislation, ATOC advice, railway bye-laws and for passenger comfort. This includes all station concourses, ticket hall, footbridges and subways at station premises. All trains are non-smoking environments. Smoking is not allowed on any area of the Severn Valley Railway estate. When you purchase a ticket you are agreeing to enter the estate and are subject to the bye-laws enacted.

Dogs
Dogs are charged at £4 per dog, per day. Dogs may be carried subject to payment of the appropriate fare but are NOT permitted in First Class accommodation (open carriages or compartments) and in catering vehicles such as Buffet cars and Dining vehicles (this restriction does not apply to Dogs assisting passengers with disabilities).
Dogs must remain on the floor of coaches and are NOT permitted on seats, tables or laps in any circumstances. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and under strict control. If a Dog is causing unnecessary disruption (including, but not limited to, biting, barking, or fighting with another Dog etc.) SVR Staff may request that for the safety of our Passengers, Staff & Volunteers, the Dog is refused travel onboard our services and/or asked to leave SVR premises.
If a Dog is so large that it is blocking an aisle the SVR on train Guard may require that for safety it is carried in the Guard’s van on the train.
Dogs must not be allowed to defecate anywhere and any incidents should be cleared away by their owners.
With the exception of assistance dogs, dogs are not permitted in our buffets or restaurants due to strict guidelines supported by EHO advice. Whilst we are doing our very best to consider and include dogs in everything we can do, the buffets are areas which we must exclude dogs, for hygiene reasons.
Dogs are not permitted to travel on Santa Trains, The Enchanted Express, Ghost Trains, Scream Trains or Carol Trains, with the exception of assistance dogs. This list is not exhaustive, and the SVR reserves the right to restrict access for dogs on other services.
Other animals are NOT permitted on SVR trains.

Refunds and Compensation
Refunds, changes and exchanges of tickets will not be considered.
The SVR operates heritage locomotives and coaching stock over elderly infrastructure using historic systems. Inherent in the delivery of that heritage experience is a degree of potential delay that might be unreasonable for a modern railway network. In determining whether or not the SVR has exercised reasonable care in the provision of services due account shall be taken that their primary purpose is the provision of a heritage travel experience and not transport to a precise Timetable.

Car Parking
Passengers’ motor vehicles may be parked in SVR controlled car parks subject to availability of marked spaces and payment of the parking charges displayed at the site.
SVR does not undertake to provide a secure or attended car park. Motor vehicles are parked at the owner’s/driver’s risk.

Locomotives
Locomotives sometimes release cinders and other oily deposits into the atmosphere. SVR cannot take responsibility for damage to visitors’ clothing, vehicles or other personal belongings caused by these occurrences. Steam locomotives operate under high pressure and as a result can be noisy when releasing steam, or during their standard operation. Whilst every effort will be maintained to control the noise SVR cannot take responsibility for the level of noise issued by our engines.

Accessibility
All of the SVR’s trains now have specially-adapted wheelchair accommodation. We can accommodate wheelchairs that are within the dimensions prescribed in government regulations covering public transport (700mm wide by 1200mm long). We can only accommodate standard designs of wheelchair and mobility scooter. Unfortunately, some larger vehicles are too wide and heavy to traverse the ramp into our carriages. Our ramps are rated to a combined maximum load (user and chair/aid) of 350kg.
Our wheelchair-adapted carriages all have disabled toilets
Each of these carriages carries its own ramp, to facilitate access for wheelchairs, mobility scooters and pushchairs. You can alight at all stations, and our train crew and station staff will give assistance if you need it. Please don’t hesitate to ask, as this is something we’re very used to doing.
